Ellie July 9, 2016 at 11:11 am I love the flower district and its history. It’s a lovely hidden gem of NYC, one of the few! I visited in June for the first time, despite having been to NYC so many times – 14 or 15 I think and counting. I hope it stays.

Then I arranged the florals for a Remodelista Market in New York and had an excuse to visit the flower market again. While I’m still no expert, I feel like I have a sufficient number of visits under my belt to offer a tip or two. Consider this the amateur’s guide to navigating New York’s flower market, and use it as excuse to make a trip (or two) to the market for yourself.

I come up to NYC by bus about once a month to lead “photo safaris,” and the bus drops me off at 28th and 7th. I always arrive on the 8:30am bus so as to spend several hours in enjoying Manhattan prior to my 1pm tours, and the first thing I do is walk through the Flower District.

The Chelsea Flower Market strip grew organically in the 1890s, when flower wholesalers began flocking to the Ladies’ Mile shopping area. There were scores of shops along 28th Street and even more along the avenues and nearby streets as well. Now there are about twenty shops where you can find not only flowers, but ribbons, fake fruit, holiday lights, seashells and a whole lot more. Below are a few of our favorites, but don’t stop there! It’s really easy and fun to check out the whole block.

Visit the loo before or after your visit. Because the Flower Market is a place of wholesale business first, and a public market second, you may not find the easily accessible or fresh-scented restrooms of other retail shops. Instead, check out list below of nearby spots to visit for a bite to eat or a diaper change to make your outing to Chelsea easier.

As a floral designer based in California, this was the coolest experience on my last trip to NYC. We stayed on W 28th and got to wake up early every morning to experience the hustle and bustle of this block and the surrounding neighborhood. I love that you included all the old signage! If you ever get a chance you should attempt to get a rooftop view of the area. There are some amazing gardens hidden up on top of these historic buildings including the classic water towers that should not be missed. (Hint: Hotel Indigo’s Glass Bar on the 23rd floor has a great view, as do some other “secret” rooftop vantage points)

My mission—and I chose to accept it—was to audit Trish O’Sullivan’s “Shopping the New York Flower Market” class in Manhattan. This four-hour insiders’ tour offers a priceless introduction to the business side of floral design and teaches students where to shop for flowers, vases, and related accessories, like ribbons, wire, and event supplies.

The Flower Market isn’t all about fresh cut flowers, though. Wholesale shops, like Lasting Art, boast immense quantities of specialty wire, ribbon, and other trimmings, plus silk flowers you’re convinced are the real thing until you touch them. Trish pointed out that designers just starting in the industry should hang on to their money before going on any shopping sprees for anything but fresh flowers.

Bring a sweater. The Flower Market shops get chilly, as refrigeration is a must to keep the flowers from wilting and to lengthen their shelf life. If you visit during the summer, you may love the blast of AC or perusing flowers stored in walk-in coolers. But the kiddos will thaw quickly and should have an extra layer to don, just in case.

Given the gentrification of Chelsea and proximity to Penn Station, dependable chain establishments abound near the Chelsea Flower Market. While rather unsexy, we admit that sometimes it’s a dream to have diaper changing tables and healthy food options in a 2 to 3 block radius. Here’s a short list of places to tuck into for a morning snack or potty break:

Joan November 12, 2011 at 3:37 pm In the 1970s, there was an illegal restaurant, My Silky Valentine, on the 2nd or 3rd floor above one of the flower businesses. It took up the entire floor. Ah! The ambience! One would call ahead to make a reservation. The cuisine was sublime. Sadly, they were caught and closed down when someone squealed.

Connie March 30, 2015 at 1:44 pm Wonderful story and great photos. The story, (could be a book on places to see in NY) brings the flower district to life for many who didn’t know it existed. Thank you I plan on visiting it this week and purchasing my Easter gifts there as well.

The rose is the exception to the seasonality equation. The largest produced flower, as well with the greatest demand worldwide, has catapulted it to year round production throughout the globe.
